Electrical Panel Upgrades — 100A, 200A, 400A — Northern NJ

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. If it's a 60-amp fuse box, an obsolete Federal Pacific or Zinsco, or a 100-amp panel that can't keep up with modern loads (induction stove, EV charger, heat pump, hot tub), it's time for an upgrade — for safety, capacity, and code compliance.

Gareffa Electric is a licensed and insured NJ electrical contractor specializing in residential and small-commercial service upgrades across Bergen, Hudson, Essex, and Passaic counties. We handle the full job: load calculations, permits, utility coordination with PSE&G and JCP&L, panel installation, inspection, and final close-out.

When to upgrade your panel

  • You have a fuse box or 60-amp service. Most modern homes need at least 100A; many need 200A.
  • Your panel is Federal Pacific (FPE), Zinsco, or Challenger. These brands are documented fire and shock hazards and most insurers won't cover homes with them.
  • Breakers trip frequently. If you're losing the kitchen circuit every time the microwave and toaster run together, your panel is undersized.
  • You're adding major loads. EV charger, central AC, heat pump, electric range, hot tub, ADU, in-law suite, or a finished basement.
  • Your panel is rusted, sparking, warm to the touch, or has scorching. Stop reading and call us.
  • You're selling. A modern 200A panel is one of the highest-ROI electrical upgrades for resale.

What a panel upgrade includes

  • On-site walk-through and load calculation
  • Permit pulled in our name with your local NJ municipality
  • Utility coordination — PSE&G, JCP&L, or your local provider — for service drop disconnect/reconnect
  • Mast, meter pan, service entrance conductors, and grounding/bonding to current NEC + NJ code
  • New main breaker panel — Square D, Eaton, or Siemens (your choice or our recommendation)
  • Re-termination and labeling of every existing branch circuit
  • AFCI and GFCI breaker upgrades where code requires
  • Required surge protection (NEC 230.67)
  • Rough and final inspection coordinated and attended by our team
  • Close-out documentation, written warranty, and labeled directory

Service sizes we install most

  • 100A overhead or underground — common for older homes with modest electrical loads
  • 200A overhead or underground — modern standard, handles EV + heat pump + range + everything else
  • 320A / 400A — large homes, accessory dwelling units, multi-meter installations, small commercial

What a panel upgrade actually costs in NJ

Honest answer: it depends. A straightforward 100A → 200A overhead service swap on a single-family home runs roughly $3,500–$6,500 all-in. Underground service, mast relocations, meter pan moves, sub-panels, or load-side rework push it higher. We don't quote panel upgrades over the phone — we send a licensed estimator out, walk the job, look at your meter and existing routing, and hand you a written line-item bid.

Our $100 Estimate covers the on-site walk-through and detailed written quote. The $100 is credited back if you hire us for the job.

How a Gareffa panel upgrade goes

  1. Estimate visit. We come out, take photos, do a load calc, look at your meter and grounding. Walk-through takes about an hour.
  2. Written quote. Within a few business days you get a line-item bid: panel, materials, permit, utility coordination, labor, schedule.
  3. Schedule and permit. On approval, we pull the permit and coordinate the utility shutoff with PSE&G or JCP&L. Most upgrades schedule 2–4 weeks out.
  4. Install day. Power off in the morning, panel and service work done, power restored by end of day. Rough inspection same week.
  5. Final inspection and close-out. We meet the inspector, hand over the close-out packet, walk you through the new panel and labeled directory.

05 / Q&A

Good questions,
straight answers.

What's the difference between Same-Day, Scheduled, and Estimate?

Same-Day Service ($350) is priority dispatch for problems you need fixed today — broken, dead, or tripping. We get there, diagnose, and repair on the spot, with the first hour included. Scheduled Service ($150) is the same hands-on diagnostic and repair work, but for non-urgent issues you can book a day or two out. Estimate ($100) is a written walk-through for planned upgrades — service panels, EV chargers, additions, remodels. The $100 is credited back if you hire us for the project.

What does the $350 same-day service actually include?

The trip out, the diagnostic, and a full hour of a licensed electrician's labor on-site. That's not a "show-up fee" — it's an hour of real work. Most common residential issues (dead outlets, tripping breakers, faulty switches, GFCI replacements, light fixture troubleshooting) get diagnosed and fixed within that hour. If the issue runs longer or needs parts, we give you a complete written price before we keep going.

What if the fix takes longer than an hour?

We diagnose first, then quote the full job before doing any extra work. You see the price and approve it before we proceed — never any "oh, that'll be another $400" at the end. If the project ends up over $1,500, your $350 same-day service fee is credited toward the total.

Why do you take a deposit when I book?

Honestly, because the moment you book, we're already on our way. Your deposit dispatches a licensed electrician toward your house, locks in your slot, and gives our techs a confirmed schedule, so we're not double-booking or showing up to empty driveways. If you cancel more than 2 hours before your window, we refund in full. Inside 2 hours we keep the deposit since we've already held the slot for you and the truck is rolling.

Are you really licensed and insured?

Yes — NJ Electrical Contractor License #18578, $2M general liability, fully insured for residential and commercial work. We're happy to send certificates of insurance to property managers, condo boards, or landlords on request.

Let's get it
fixed.

Book online in under a minute. A licensed electrician will be on the way today, and you'll know exactly what it costs before we even ring the doorbell.
